MRO Services

A Medical Review Officer (MRO) is a licensed physician who has knowledge of substance abuse disorders, laboratory testing procedures, and chain of custody collection procedures. Their essential function is the interpretation of forensic drug testing results in the context of a regulatory and policy framework.

Services include the interpretation and verification of test results from confirmed positive, invalid, adulterated and substituted specimens in addition to interpreting and evaluating an employee’s positive test result in relation to the employee’s medical history or any other relevant biomedical information.

Using an MRO to review and interpret the laboratory test results protects the employer from having to make decisions regarding an employee’s claims that his or her drug test result was caused by a medication or medical treatment. It also prevents the employer from having to deal with the complicated issues related to the release or disclosure of private employee medical information.

The MRO is a required element of both federally mandated as well as many state drug-free workplace programs. It is highly recommended that employers utilize the services of an MRO for all drug testing, even if it not required by state law.
